AUTOMOD TO AID LITTLEWOODS IN NEW WAREHOUSE DESIGN The Littlewoods Home Shopping Group recently announced a three-year development plan for a new warehousing and distribution facility at the Shaw Distribution Center near Manchester, U.K.The company will be investing £40,000,000 in the project and expects to create over 300 new jobs. The facility will be sized to handle 50,000,000 items per year, with over 80,000 SKUs. Automation will include a mini-load automated storage facility with 18 canes and 350,000 carton locations to be housed in a building 26 meters high. Sortation equipment for a two-level sortation center will be required as well. Project Scope Necessitates Simulation Due to the size and complexity of a facility handling this volume of product flow, Littlewoods decided the project had to be simulated. Littlewoods will use simulation to test various design alternatives, layouts and performance of the material handling equipment to ensure that operation objectives for the new facility can be met. After a careful evaluation, Littlewoods selected the AutoMod™ simulation software. Littlewoods will develop a number of AutoMod models throughout the center's development stages and commissioning. AutoLogic Systems, the U.K. distributor for AutoMod, will provide the expertise and assistance required for supporting the project. Download the full article |
