Abstract The monumental effort to institute 100% screening of all checked baggage for explosives has U.S. airports searching for solutions to difficult integration problems. InVision Technologies, Inc. has used AutoModÔ discrete-event simulation software to prove several unique concepts in the integration of its CTXÔ brand Explosives Detection Systems (EDS) into airport baggage handling systems. This presentation will concentrate on two uses of AutoMod:
- Proving the inherent efficiency of recirculating conveyor "racetracks" that allow checked bags to pass through multiple levels of security in a baggage handling scenario that is optimized for physical configuration and number of EDS units.
- Optimizing EDS operator resources through the networking of large operator groups and EDS arrays into a single intelligent Multiplex that removes the traditional 1:1 operator to EDS ratio.
Both of these concepts have been instituted in high-volume airports worldwide that continue to benefit from the use of AutoMod as a design verification and optimization tool.
